It’s the second time already, and it still moves me. I was so overwhelmed with gratefulness and happiness looking at my screen, seeing the 72 applications from 26 countries, and the enthusiasm you all shared. We have applicants that have a vast amount of experience, and are winners of mapping contests that the Academy aims at offering an alternative for. That’s just a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It’s fucking exhausting, but I kinda want to have a Masterclass every month. Every week. As often as we can. The overwhelming reaction from the scene and the community is proof that this is what we have to do, this is something that you all missed and are happy to have. We are happy to provide you with this opportunity, and we are going to push this as far as we can.
It’s my personal purpose to create artworks that raise awareness and inspire people all around the globe. We’re lucky to create in an art form that can reach millions of people, and even though it usually isn’t considered street art or public art, I have always looked at projection mapping that way.
Limelight Academy that was born of our Co-Founder, István’s sudden idea, grew into a worldwide, one-of-a-kind program within weeks that he’s now very proud of, and, in his words, “it’s like it’s been with us forever.” And what an amazing start that was! We built up the program in a week and landed our first Projection Mapping Masterclass with Factory Light Festival in Norway. It’s been a dream of István’s to work with them – and dreams come true, right?
“Education should be free – work should be paid for”
There is a growing number of mapping contests all around the world with different structures and money prize pools. What is common in almost all of them is that they only pay artists for their work in case they win the contest. There’s no professional help or specific education for projection mapping that is for experienced animators entering the contests who have no or limited knowledge and experience in projection mapping, especially outdoors and in large scale.
Ever since it first exploded into the consciousness of artists and advertisers in the 1990s, projection mapping has become an independent art form with artists of different styles and the most exciting pieces that have ever been created. At the same time, technology is now accessible to basically anyone, and there are loads of low quality projections without real artistic value, focusing on entertainment as interesting visual attractions.
Greece has a special place in my heart since I spent some years there in my early twenties, learned the language and still have many friends around. After finishing a light installation at Patchlab Festival in Krakow last October, Viktor was invited to bring that piece to Athens Digital Arts Festival. Unfortunately, we were busy with other projects, and couldn’t manage to spend enough time in Athens to deliver and build up the installation, but we just didn’t want to miss the entire festival. We decided to go and enjoy the festival, get inspired by amazing digital art pieces and performances.
How can a projection mapping artwork look as good as the animation looking on screen? As a beginner in video mapping you’ll ask this question often and might go a long way to get to the answer. You can create the best 3d animation ever and it might not look like the way you had on your screen at all. The other day you go and give it a try on a different surface with a different projector and with an animation content that is just really simple and it works much better.
What an amazing start of 2017
We’re just amazed reading a blog post from Paul Roberts on Creative Bloq about the 14 best mapping demos that will blow your mind! Guess who’s first? Hell yeah it’s our Interconnection piece created for iMapp! It just feels amazing to be selected among such great video mapping artists. So many great artworks in locations like the Sidney Opera House or the Sagrada Familia. Another important part is what the author thinks about projection mapping. After so many years I can still rarely see people getting the point of that form of art so well.

The sheer scale can be breathtaking and the illusion of everyday and static objects around us becoming animate and playfully reworked can be incredibly exciting. Just look at the expressions on the audience’s faces during a projection and you see an almost childlike glee.”
